Temperature Monitoring Modernisation in a Large-Scale Coldstore
Eyemouth Freezers operates a high-capacity coldstore in Scotland with space for over 10,000 pallets. Their primary role is the storage of seasonally harvested frozen vegetables delivered by Scottish Borders Produce (SBP), along with year-round packing of private-label products for major UK retailers.
The Challenge:
At any point, the facility holds stock valued over £3 million. Ensuring temperature stability is vital for both product integrity and disaster risk mitigation. The existing temperature monitoring system was a multi-layered setup involving battery/mains-powered probes, radio relays, and a separate transmitter. It was costly to maintain, required frequent calibration and battery changes, and was highly dependent on extensive cabling across 34,000 m².
Our Solution:
Carlton designed a streamlined, fully networked system based on Power over Ethernet (PoE). This architecture removed the need for power at the point of use and eliminated the need for relay chains and wireless transmission. The complex three-tier system was replaced by a simple probe-to-network configuration.
Each probe is powered directly from existing network switches located in the ceiling void. They can be easily removed and replaced by regular staff, without the need for engineers. Calibration now involves unplugging the probes, posting them for service, and plugging them back in on return – no tools, no disruption.
Enhanced Functionality with the COMET Platform:
The system integrates automated reporting, with fully branded, audit-ready documentation scheduled to suit operational needs. Reports are sent to multiple stakeholders and align with internal QMS protocols. Additionally, the COMET Cloud Lite offers:
- real-time mobile alerts,
- instant overview of coldstore temperatures,
- reliable out-of-hours monitoring.
This setup aligns with BRC Food Safety standards, a critical requirement for UK food storage and processing facilities.
Impact:
- 70% reduction in annual operational costs,
- substantial savings in engineering man-hours,
- improved reliability, transparency, and audit compliance.
Client Testimonial
“Carlton were switched on from the very beginning. This wasn’t just a sale – they truly took time to understand our technical and logistical challenges. The system has made a substantial impact on our operations in an extremely cold environment. The reporting, app, and software are all excellent. Users are very satisfied and we’ve already commissioned Carlton for another project. Ownership costs are remarkably low, and engineering hours have been redirected to other core tasks.”
